DETROIT – August 17, 2009 – Tournament organizers are happy to announce that the Sixth Anniversary Paul W. Smith Golf Classic benefiting Think Detroit PAL was a huge success. Thanks to the overwhelming support from the local business community, the 2009 golf classic netted $416,000 – bringing the total net funds raised to more than $2 Million in six years.   

The 2009 Paul W. Smith Golf Classic was held Monday, August 17.

Title Sponsor News/Talk 760 WJR was joined by Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Group LLC, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Compuware Corporation as Presenting Sponsors.

The tournament took place at the Detroit Golf Club, a 219-acre club with two beautifully wooded courses.   The event featured shotgun starts on the North and South courses, contests on both courses and awards reception immediately after. A member of the Think Detroit PAL soccer program, Chaynice Simmons spoke at the reception.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back and Super Bowl Champion Jerome Bettis was awarded the “Athletes in Action” award given to a Detroit area professional athlete who exhibits outstanding community leadership.

Members of each winning foursome received two first class round-trip tickets courtesy of Delta Air Lines. 

The Paul W. Smith Golf Classic is one of the top fundraisers for Think Detroit PAL, a non-profit organization that relies on contributions from individual donors, foundations and corporations.  In partnership with the Detroit Police Department and community volunteers, Think Detroit PAL builds character in young people through athletic, academic and leadership development programs, serving nearly 13,000 kids with the help of 1,500 volunteers.
